One politician has a plan to cut down on the threat of copier hard drives serving as a treasure trove for identity thieves.
Citing recent news reports about sensitive info being found on used copiers, Representative Edward Markey (D-Mass.) recognized the need for greater care regarding copier hard drives.
In a letter to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), Markey asked the agency to investigate the issue and “to provide consumers with additional information about the privacy risks associated with the use of digital copiers for copying sensitive information and the steps consumers can take to reduce these risks.”
He also called on companies and government agencies to be “responsible stewards of personal information,” and properly wipe copier drives of any personal information before the machine is sold or returned to a leasing agent.
