Copier, Printer and MFP market shows major growth

Sales of hardcopy office devices (printers, copiers, and multifunctionals) surged by 8.1% year-over-year in the first quarter of 2010. Total machine sales in the industry equaled $13.8 billion.
That’s according to the latest survey put out by consulting company IDC in its Worldwide Hardcopy Peripheral Tracker.
The survey shows significant growth for the second quarter in a row, and signifies a big rebound in office equipment as the world slowly emerges from a recession.
The big growth leader was in color MFPs, which showed growth of 25%, closely followed by black-and-white MFPs (18% growth). Samsung showed the biggest growth in sales in laser MFPs, while Hewlett-Packard saw industry-leading growth in ink jet MFPs.In fact, ink jet MFPs continued to show remarkable growth, in spite of the crushing cost of supplies for such devices.
HP, Canon and Epson have 85% worldwide market share in color ink jet MFPs.
While all companies saw growth during the period, HP retained its worldwide domination in number of units shipped, with a crushing 53% of all units sold in the US and 41% of all units sold worldwide. It was followed by (in order) Canon, Epson, Samsung and Brother. Lexmark came in at #4 in US unit sales.
Of course, the real money comes in the follow-up supplies market — hardware sales are at best a break-even proposition. That’s especially true with ink jet machines, which are generally very low in terms of initial purchase price, but offer a very strong and constant return in terms of ink and toner sales.
