A small-footprint copier MFP

The MX-B401 is Sharp’s new black-and-white high-speed (40ppm) office machine. While it has many of the features and some of the look of a copier-multifunctional, it also is like a printer-multifunctional in that it handles paper up to legal size, not ledger-size paper like most copier MFPs.
With a list price of $4,995, the MX-B401 is aimed at an office that needs a fast, flexible copier MFP, but doesn’t need some of the extended paper-handling and finishing features of such heavy-duty models as the Sharp MX-M350N (35ppm) and MX-M450N (45ppm). In addition, the lower-cost MX-B401 comes out of the box with additional standard features like network scanning and PostScript.
This model is a member of Sharp’s new Frontier series, a set of small-footprint office multifunctionals. This model has an advanced print controller that is similar to the one used in Sharp’s high-volume copiers, and an internal document filing system.
The printing feature includes both PostScript and PCL as standard features. The network scanning capability uses Sharp’s ImageSend technology, which allows you to set a number of one-touch scan destinations. It supports scanning to folder, to email, to FTP, and to flash memory.
Conclusion: Sharp is finding a new niche, one that makes sense. Many offices already have one or more copiers that can handle high-end finishing, ledger-size paper, and extra-long jobs. But the vast majority of jobs on a copier MFP don’t need those features. As a result, the savings in money and in space of getting a fax machine with most of the features of a high-end copier but without the unneeded extras makes a lot of sense.
