Data breaches: Prepare now
June 29, 2010 by Steve HannafordPosted in: In this week's e-newsletter, Latest News & Views, Security
No matter how clever your IT department and how strong your firewall, we have seen that a data breach, particularly one involving sensitive customer data, has a good chance of hitting your company.
And when it does hit, a rapid coordinated response needs to be ready, or else you have a good chance of bungling the response, hurting your corporate reputation and making the company a likely target for lawsuits.
That’s the message from a new podcast, “How to Respond When Sensitive Customer and Employee Data is Breached, Stolen or Compromised.”
The podcast, sponsored by the ACE Group, a major corporate insurance underwriter, features an attorney with expertise in the field as well as an expert in corporate risk from ACE.
Among the advice given in the podcast:
- Identify in advance a team responsible for coordinating the response to a data breach. The team should include people familiar with IT security, corporate communications, legal and compliance.
- Designate a leader for that team to coordinate efforts.
- Designate a single person to communicate with the media or designate a third-party PR firm with experience in that area.
- Prepare in advance draft written communications to customers and business partners, in order to be able to respond rapidly.
- Know in advance whether law-enforcement agencies must be contacted, and figure out which ones to contact and how to do it.
- Work through a few scenarios in advance so that the checklist of steps to be taken and the responsibilities of the team members can be spelled out.
