A recent news story shows how serious the threat of insider IT sabotage is.
Jason Wang was arrested recently after allegedly hacking into the network of his former employer, North General Hospital in New York, and stealing patient records and test results.
Wang was fired last year, and continued to access the network after his termination, hospital officials said. He also allegedly used a doctor’s e-mail account to send scathing messages to other staffers accusing hospital leadership of being racist.
He was charged with one count each of computer trespass, unauthorized use of a computer and fourth-degree computer tampering, the New York Post reports.
How can your business limit the threat of something like this happening? Experts recommend IT departments:
- Always give staffers the least amount of privilege possible
- Monitor changes made to privileges and access rights, and
- Immediately revoke admin rights when staffers are terminated.
