U.S.-based printer and MFP manufacturer Lexmark announced it would buy Perceptive Software, a company that sells business content management software.
The deal, for $260 million, will extend Lexmark’s capability to provide integrated software with its extensive smart MFP lineup. The move is based on company confidence as Lexmark has seen solid gains in profit and sales over the last quarter.
According to a Wall Street Journal article, the advantage that Perceptive brings is that its focus on the departmental and divisional solutions rather than the corporate level. That means that it allows departments to easily set up a data-based workflow without having to coordinate a massive company-wide project with a daunting development schedule.
For Lexmark, which is much less likely to get into a big company at a corporate level than such rivals as HP, Canon or IBM, the software offers an excellent entry for situations where departments and smaller companies need tools for specific data management tasks that they can set up quickly.
Perceptive Software clients range from utilities to universities, and from insurance companies to manufacturers, in applications ranging from financial reporting to HR management, and from medical insurance coding to student record keeping.
Like other office hardware companies, Lexmark has realized that given a pretty level playing field in terms of printer technology, the key to success is offering a set of tools that do more than put toner on paper.
