Lighter side: Dot matrix printers find new life as musical instruments

Though dot matrix printers have little use in a business environment these days, a pair of artists has hung onto the machines for a different reason.
Performing at next week’s Mutek electronic music festival in Montreal, the duo, which bills itself as The User, will coordinate the operation of a series of dot matrix printers to perform a composition called “Symphony for Dot Matrix Printers #2.”
Each printer is connected to an old PC containing a text file to print. Composer Emmanuel Madan equates the set-up to that of a traditional orchestra: The printer is the instrument, the PC is the musician, and the text file is the sheet music.
The group first performed the piece a decade ago. Given the aging equipment, this could be the last time its played, PC World reports.
