Lighter side: Printers flatter their users

Ever printed out a photo of yourself and were especially pleased with how you looked? Apparently, the printer may have done that on purpose.
A recent PC World story describes how photos printed with HP ink jet printers look more vibrant and color-saturated than with other brands of printers — and more so than the image looked in real life.
HP admits the phenomenon is deliberate: “We tune for what the customer wants, not for accuracy,” said marketing manager Thom Brown. “Most people tend to like the more vibrant photos. People tend to want to remember something that looks slightly better than reality.”
It’s a win-win situation — the happier users are with the images, the more they will spend on paper and ink to print.
Of course, if you’d rather see things as they are, HP’s printer software lets you dial back the effect.
