New HP printers offer true plug-and-play

Hewlett-Packard this week announced a new set of black-and-white printers and printer-multifunctionals that it terms the industry’s first plug-and-play interface.
What distinguishes these machines is that they use HP’s Instant Install software, which starts working as soon as the machine is linked up via USB to an Internet-connected computer. The embedded software connects to the Web, then finds and downloads the appropriate driver.
No CD is required to set the printers up, and users won’t have to manually install print drivers over the Internet. HP estimates the average set-up time to be two minutes.
It’s a simple but welcome change. This technology will simplify life especially for laptop users who need to connect to a printer for a single time. Rather than searching on the Internet and trying to decide what version of driver to download, this new technology does it automatically.
The machines are personal and small workgroup models, including the LaserJet M1130 and M1219 multifunctionals and the LaserJet Pro P1100, P1566 and P1606dn printers.
The machines also pioneer an auto-on/auto-off technology that turns the printer on only when jobs are sent, with minimal wait and considerable energy savings.
