Printing green: In your future?

Ink made from soybeans has been available for a while, but a company recently started selling soy-based toner that could help a company’s bottom line while protecting the environment.
PRC Technologies is producing SoyPrint laser printer cartridges with toner powder made from soybeans.
The primary benefit is the impact on the environment. It takes two liters of petroleum to produce the toner in one regular cartridge, says PRC president Debe Overhaugh. That’s an estimated 50 million gallons of oil used just for toner every year.
And as cost goes, PRC says SoyPrint cartidges are priced at least comparably to name brand products. For example, the SoyPrint version of a C4182X cartridge costs $175, compared to a cartridge sold on HP’s Web site for $222.99.
The quality matches that of non-soy cartridges, too, Overhaugh says, and SoyPrint cartridges produce as many pages as their traditional counterparts.
