R.I.P.: Floppy disks

It appears the end is officially coming for the 3.5-inch floppy.
Sony, one of the few manufacturers still making the disks, has announced it will end production of the iconic storage format by March 2011.
Though the 1.44 MB disks have been largely replaced by other storage methods, such as CDs and USB flash drives, Sony did manage to sell 12 million floppy disks in 2009. The company commands a 70% market share of the product, as most other large manufacturers have already withdrawn from the market.
Even as the disk has been in decline for more than a decade (Apple released the first iMac with no floppy drive in 1998), a somewhat high profile, still serving as a common “Save” icon in many applications, such as Microsoft Word.
