A recent survey asked businesses what energy-reducing strategies they’ve implemented. The most popular answer:
Reducing the number of printers used.
More than 80% of companies are trying to cut energy costs, according to a survey of 1,000 IT decision-makers by the Info-Tech research group. The most popular green initiatives they’re undertaking:
- Printer consolidation (57%)
- Recycling equipment (56%)
- PC power management (53%), and
- Consolidating servers (52%).
The key driver, of course: the cost savings. As one of the survey’s respondents said, “It’s not that we’re tree huggers, but we’re interested in saving money, as well as consumption and emissions.”
Just how much can printer consolidation save? According to the report, the typical mid-size company can reduce its fleet by about two-thirds. Companies also report the slightly reduced convenience that comes with having fewer printers helps cut the number of pages employees print.
When you factor in machine and maintenance savings, as well as the reduction in paper use, that can be a big impact on the bottom line.

A bit silly really! According to Gartner, printers only make up 6% of an average IT organisations energy whereas PC’s and Monitors make up 39%. Where do you think the number 1 way to cut energy use is?

Thanks for the tips! I really need them. I bet PC’s eat up more energy compare to printers.
