You docs’ biggest security threat? Look around you

When we think about data thieves, we usually imagine foreign hackers using malware to siphon information remotely. But the bigger threat is a lot closer to home.
When asked what human threat they were most concerned about, the vast majority (80%) of Chief Security Officers said insiders, according to a recent survey of CSOs by NetWitness Corporation and MIS Training Institute. Just 18% said they were worried most about cybercriminals and other external sources.
Insider threats cited include employees, ex-employees and contractors.
But just because IT security folks recognize the problem doesn’t mean they have company-wide cooperation in trying to prevent security breaches. Another recent survey, conducted by Courion Corp., found that 93% of business managers are “confident” that terminated employees pose no risk to network security.
Sounds like better communication between management and IT is needed at many businesses.
